Shez for You Wins (again) at Sam Houston Park!

March 3, 2017

Shez for You (by Macho Uno out of Shebelongstoyou), shipped to Sam Houston Race Park (HOU), was entered into an Allowance race, and returned to the winner’s circle for the third time in her young career.

“The grandstand was overflowing with happy-go-lucky fans on 50-cent beer night,” reports Fred Taylor, Mojo’s CEM. “And, the Mojo Filly delivered a commanding performance under the lights!”

Race Recap

Piloted by Jockey David Cabrera, the Mojo Filly came out of the gate cleanly, moved over to the rail, and was sitting comfortably off the hip of the front runner that was setting a modest pace.  Halfway down the backstretch, Shez for You took the lead and control of the race.  Going into the far turn, Cabrera nudged the Mojo Filly forward to test her rivals.  At the top of the stretch, Shez for You opened up on the field and expanded her lead.  Deep in the stretch, the favorite tried to close on her, but was no match for Mojo Filly’s strides who drew off to win by 2.5 lengths!

"The way the horse performed and the jockey implemented his strategy, it was a text book method for running this type of race," Fred explains. "She needed her last out (finished 3rd at Delta Downs on 8FEB17) as a tune up after a 7-week gap between races, and she returned to form at this tricky middle distance (7-furlong sprint) against seasoned runners/winners.”

To win a 7-furlong race at the Allowance level, the horse needs a combination of speed and endurance.

“I’m really proud of the way she ran in this race,” Mojo’s Trainer, JR Caldwell said.  “She’s been coming along nicely in her development and she handled the competition the way we hoped she would for these conditions.”

Shez for You has now won 3 races out of 10 starts (30% win), and in 6 races, she’s finished Top 3 (60% “on the board”).

Mojo Strategy

“I always give most of the credit to JR and his Team for the care they provide to keep all of our Mojo Runners healthy and sound, and for placing them in the right spots so they have a competitive shot at winning each time they step foot on the race track,” Fred continues.  “That said, I can’t forget one of my Capital Partners, Evelyn Middleton, who told me and JR to ‘go get us a filly!’ at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale two years ago.”  Using the residual funds in their bloodstock budget, Mojo purchased Shez for You for $5,500 and the Mojo Filly has certainly returned the purchase price many times over since then.

“That was a sporting/competitive move for us at the time,” Fred admits.  “We had already bought two yearlings for the group (colts: Sound of Fury and Left Coast Dreams), but we still had money in our pocket and didn't have a filly.  We could've walked away happy that we found two solid horses and we were under budget."

"But, we decided to change the business model by adding a third horse into the mix," Fred explains.  "It was a new way of thinking and a new strategy for us. I'm always open to new ideas as long as we can afford to do it."

"So, we took a shot to see if we could find a filly and stay within our budget," Fred continues.  "Well, we did it, and that decision has definitely paid off because all three of the horses in this racing group are now multiple winners (and consistently finish in the Top 3) thanks to JR and his Team.  And, as a result, we've also tripled the level of excitment for our Mojo Partners and Fans by making that decision.”

Mojo repeated the same 3-horse purchase strategy at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, and those Runners (Brickyard Baby, Thermistor, and Tags to Riches) will be making their racing debuts for the new Mojo Trio racing group during the Spring Meet at Lone Star Park.

So, stay tuned for upcoming racing info about the Mojo Filly and our other Mojo Runners!
