Thermistor Wins the $100,000 Gold Rush Futurity!

Mr. T Stretch ArP 13AUG17 Mr T Finisih ArP 13AUG17

August 14, 2017

Thunderstorms and showers before the race couldn't stop Thermistor (a.k.a. Mr. T), Mojo’s two-year-old Colt (by Frost Giant out of Sinister Quill) from winning the $100,000 Gold Rush Futurity at Arapahoe Park!

“He ran exactly the way we had hoped,” said Fred Taylor, Mojo’s CEM.  “I'm absolutely thrilled that Mr. T lived up to expectations - we had big shoes to fill and this is a huge achievement for our organization that validates the Mojo Concept.  I'm so happy for our Trainer, JR Caldwell, his Team, and Jockey Danny Sorenson - they've put a lot of time and effort into getting Thermistor ready for this race and it paid off for everyone involved!"

Race Recap

At the start, Thermistor broke sharp and went to the lead.  Under a hand ride down the backstretch, Mr. T expanded the margins by four lengths. Going into the turn, as Fortified Effort drew up on Thermistor's hip, but Thermistor wasn't bothered by the pressure and kept to his tasks. At the top of the stretch, Fortified Effort put his head in front, but Mr. T wasn't finished - digging in, Thermistor regained the lead and drew off under a hand ride to win by 3/4 length.

After the race, Jockey Danny Sorenson explained that he let Thermistor get out on his own, allowed the other horses to come to Mr. T and urge him along, and then when challenged, he nudged Thermistor to get on with his business at the top of the stretch.  When asked if he felt like he had to get to the bottom of Mr. T coming home, Sorenson said: “No.  He had a lot left to give, there just wasn’t any reason to call on him to give it.  The horse was in control the whole way.  He got a little tired at the end, but that’s because of the altitude and track conditions. He can do more if I wanted him to—I just didn’t need to do that.”

“We dedicated this race to JR and his family,” Fred explained. Earlier in the week, Dora Lee Caldwell passed away and the Mojo Trainer was tending to family matters on race day.  "All Mojo Partners extend our heartfelt condolences to JR.  We have to believe his mother was watching the action from above and is very pleased with the accomplishments of her son's horse."

So, what’s next for Thermistor?

“JR will place Thermistor where he believes is the best fit and we'll go along for the ride," Fred stated.  "There are plenty of options at the upcoming Remington Park Meet and abroad, and we know JR will find the right spot that fits his competitive ability.”
