What Makes People Want
to Own a Race Horse? November 25, 2012 Fred Taylor, Jr. Founder, CEM, and President Mojo Thoroughbred Holdings, LLC My business, Mojo Thoroughbred Holdings, LLC, buys race horses and organizes groups of people to purchase shares in the horses we own. Horse racing is in my blood, and I’ve been in this business for over six years. I grew up in
the town that becomes the epicenter for Thoroughbred racing the
first
Saturday in May. And, whether you're aware
of
everything there is to know about racing, or nothing at all, people
want to be
in Louisville for the Kentucky Derby. Irvin
Cobb once said, “Until you go to Kentucky and
with your own eyes
behold the Derby, you ain’t never been nowhere and you
ain’t never seen
nothin’!” It’s true. The Derby is
the embodiment of all other races around the world.
Hands down, it’s unanimously considered to be
the greatest two minutes in sports, and winning it is one of the most
coveted
accomplishments on the planet. The
thrill, the passion, and the pageantry of the Derby makes it an event
that
everyone wants to say they've attended at least once in their life. Furman Bisher wrote, “The Derby has no
detractors. It’s everybody’s
game. At the Derby, you’re not only
a spectator,
you can be one of the players.” This is the fundamental,
underlying reason why people want to own a race horse. Unlike
other
sports, participating in the Derby is actually possible for anyone with
the
right three-year-old race horse. And,
it’s this possibility, this glimmer of hope, that makes people
around the world
dream about what it would be like to own a race horse and actually feel
the experience of standing in the winner's circle beneath the Twin
Spires. Like many horsemen out
there, the "Run for the Roses" is always on my mind. I can't wait
for the next call to the post and the band to play "My Old Kentucky
Home". So, in the meantime, I'm going to share with you my
insights about race horse ownership. And, in future
articles, I’ll talk about the basics of owning a
race horse; the business of owning a race horse; the benefits of
participating
in a racing group; and things to consider about partnerships. Stay tuned.... You can also follow Mojo on Facebook and get the latests Mojo Tweets |
